I have worked for various corporate companies for many years and it was great trepidation that i cast aside my tie and suit to come and live and work for an NGO in Guatemala, whilst working their I realised the issues that non profits face in raising awareness (hence launching NGO Web Solutions & Antigua Daily). So with a history of online marketing and the corporate mindset I have decided in my pompousness to try and share a little of that knowledge! I have often thought about how the NGO community can benefit from the power of social media, online marketing and utilising the power of the web - there has never been a better time or way to engage with your constituents, than with the engagement possibilities that online communities such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace(to name a few) can offer. I truly believe we can all learn to make engage our audiences as NGO’s, widen our donor base and open up our organisations to the online community!
I completely agree with the die hards, there are times that face to face communication and in person rallies are the best way to solicit our constituents attention, but should we really be ready to exclude outright what a few minutes efforts on twitter can do? We live in a world where time is the most valuable commodity we have so perhaps a tweet here and there can give your NGO the viral edge to your fundraising event? A twitter lunch anyone?
I have decided to use Antiguadaily.com as a sort of measuring post, so as it stands with Antigua Daily only officially live for a couple of weeks - here are some stats
- Twitter Followers : 24
- Facebook Friends : 49
- Site Members : 27
I will keep these numbers updated so let’s see where we can get Antigua Daily site by 1st January 2010!
So with that in mind over the course of the coming weeks I shall be outlining some ideas for non profit marketing, both in social networks and beyond.
